The Bridge is Out

What would you do if a trusted friend told you to take another route home...that the bridge on your regular route is out. You would listen, of course, and take the alternate route.

Why, then, do we revile God when we take the wrong route and fall into the abyss? His Word tells us how to live--how the universe works--but we so often choose the other way. He is, in fact, saying 'Don't go that way...the bridge is out! You'll get hurt!'

And when we go our own way, willfully ignoring the Father's counsel, and get into trouble, our first response is to blame Him...why did He let [whatever] happen? How could He allow [whatever]?

All the time He's been shouting, 'The bridge is out! Don't go that way! The wages of sin is death!' He even sent His Son with the message, to make sure we got it. To show us His love and concern for our well being, that His will is only good for us.

The good news is, of course, that He's always there to tenderly pick us up, brush us off and kiss our hurts. We make mistake after mistake, but He's always there to lift us up. We rail against Him, but He never forsakes us. We are His children, one with Him, already forgiven and blessed. Psalm 3:3 says 'But You, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head.' What a comforting, beautiful thought--and so contrary to popular heretical teachings that God desires your pain.

So next time you think something in the Word is arbitrary or unfair, remember...it's your Father telling you 'The bridge is out! Don't go that way! I'll show you the way!'
