God's Thoughts and Ways

Here's a well-known passage...let's take a fresh look.

'"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," declares the LORD. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there without watering the earth and making it bear and sprout, and furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater;

"So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it."' [Isaiah 55:9-11]

God's first statement is just that—a statement of fact. It's not an explanation of how, just what is.

His thoughts and ways are higher than ours—different, better. In other words, He doesn't operate the way we do, or to put it more accurately, we don't operate the way He does. At least not in the Old Testament...

In the New Covenant, however, we have the mind of Christ—His thoughts—and we are One Spirit with the Lord, born of the imperishable seed which is the Word of God! And Jesus told us plainly that the works He did, we would do also, and greater works because He was going to the Father! [1 Corinthians 2:16; 1 Corinthians 6:17; John 14:12]

Jesus also said that if we've known and seen Him, we've known and seen the Father. In other words, He thinks and acts just like the Father! [John 14:7]

So it would make sense for us to know just what God the Father is talking about in this passage...what are His thoughts and ways?

Happily, He reveals them in the very next couple of verses!

His Word goes forth and succeeds in the matter for which He sends it! That's how He does things...His thoughts and His ways!

He speaks with the intent that it WILL come to pass, period. And it does.

Isn't that exactly what Jesus told us to do when He told us to speak to mountains and trees? Believe that what you say will happen? [Mark 11:22-24]

Sounds like intent to me.

Ephesians 5:1 tells us to be imitators of God, as beloved children, and 5:8 tells us to walk as children of Light. And Proverbs 18:21 says 'Death and life are in the power [hand] of the tongue...'

Think and act like Him.
